Welcome to EasyAvatar

What is 'locking' an avatar to a specific website?

It is a way in which you can prevent someone from using 'your' EasyAvatar account in order to steal/use your avatars. Here is an example:

1) you have set up an avatar on your favorite web forum at 'http://www.myfavoriteforum.com/forums'

2) you can set any of your avatars to be 'locked' to that website simply by entering as much of the website address into the 'Lock to' text box, such as 'www.myfavoriteforum.com'.

3) what this does is simply keep someone from 'http://www.anotherforum.com' from directly using your avatars from your account. They cannot call your avatar from the wrong website.

4) there are two situations (beyond our control) when this doesn't work. The first one is when the website(s) you belong to do not tell us who they are when they request an avatar. This is all done 'behind the scenes' and is not something that you will see. In this case, EasyAvatar will provide the avatar as requested. The second one is when someone directlty saves your avatar as a file on their computer. If an image is displayed on a users screen, then they can save it! Once they have saved it, they can do what they want with it. EasyAvatar is in no way liable for images/avatars stolen/used in this way as this is a common problem on the entire internet.

What is auto-sizing an avatar?

Some forums have strict policies for avatars. We try to adhere to them for you. If you ever receive a message from a forum that you are breaking their policy for avatars, please e-mail the policy to us at easyavatar@cfl.rr.com or provide us with a link to the policy so that we may include the rules in our database.

How it works:

1) You sign up with a forum that has a policy for avatars

2) This forum says avatars can not be larger than 100 pixels wide by 100 pixels high

3) And avatars are limited to 5k in size

4) And your avatars may not be allowed to display animation (animated .gifs) *see note 1

---

Avatars are only resized prior to being sent. This is so that you do not have to upload different versions of the same avatar just to satisfy different forum rules. One avatar will work on most sites! *see note 2

First, if the site requesting the avatar is listed in our database, it is resized so that it is not larger than the allowed width, height dimensions. Then, if the size of the avatar (in kb) is greater than the allowed size, it is reduced until it meets the policy.

*note 1: All animated GIFs that get resized according to forum rules will not be served as animated GIFs. The best thing to do is make sure any animated GIFs are of a size that most likely forums will not have problems with them. Probably no larger than 65 x 65 in width and height and no larger than 10k (10240 bytes). Upgrade accounts will allow for larger sizes.

*note 2: Certain forums seem to have problems uploading avatars from EasyAvatar. Mainly sites that use vBulletin seem to have trouble finding the avatars.
